A New Jersey State Police boat on Wednesday morning used side-scan sonar to locate a fishing trawler that sank in Sandy Hook Channel Tuesday evening. State Police divers confirmed the sunken boat is the El Jefe, authorities said. The vessel sank near buoy 14, closer to the beach.

"Due to dangerous water currents, the State Police Marine Services Bureau has suspended activity for the day," police said in a statement. "Operations will resume early tomorrow morning."

Coast Guard watchstanders received word Tuesday that the 40-foot steel fishing trawler started taking on water at 4:30 p.m. and then sank in the Sandy Hook Channel, officials said.

The Coast Guard, the NYPD, the FDNY, the New Jersey State Police, and Monmouth County authorities all sent boat crews to search for the boat and its crew. NYPD helicopters also searched for the vessel.

Search crews from the New Jersey State Police said they could not confirm that a body was found on board.
