The Chappaqua schools superintendent is stepping down. Parents of students who go to Horace Greeley want the school's principal to be suspended and an independent investigation be launched.
Dr. Lyn McKay is retiring amid a still swirling firestorm over her handling of the Christoper Schraufnagel case. Last year, police charged the now former Horace Greeley High School drama teacher with sexually abusing several students over the course of several years.
Chappaqua parents with the group called FACTS, which stands for Families Advocating for Children and Transparency in Schools, held a news conference demanding answers in the district's handling of the Schraufnagel case.
Calls for McKay to resign have been piling up, but the Board of Education issued a statement that claimed the resignation is for the purpose of retirement. The statement reads: "We would like to thank Dr. McKay for her many years of service and dedication to our schools. We thank her for her unwavering commitment to the students, our children, to the community, and to family."
Schraufnagel is expected to accept a plea deal and is due back in court on November 10.
Several civil cases are pending against the school district and its employees.
