Officials: Firefighter kills sheriff's deputy, self

LA CANADA-FLINTRIDGE, Calif. (AP) — A Los Angeles County firefighter shot and killed his wife — herself a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department who was off duty at the time — and then himself, officials said Monday.

The killing happened Sunday night at the couple's home in the Los Angeles suburb of La Canada (kahn-YAH-duh) Flintridge. The couple's 6-year-old son was there during the first shooting, and the firefighter took the boy to his grandparents' home, according to sheriff's Sgt. Carmen Arballo.

The firefighter then shot and killed himself at a fire station about 15 miles away, the sheriff's department said.

Sheriff's deputies responded Sunday to a call of a woman screaming. Inside the home, they found she had been shot and killed.

The sheriff's department said the woman was 32 years old and had been on the force for two years, while her husband had worked with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for five years.

Homicide detectives are still investigating and no names have been released. A weapon was recovered.
