Off-duty police officer killed when car hits utility pole

OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — An off-duty police officer was killed when his car struck a utility pole in central New Jersey.

Ocean Township police say Deal Police Capt. Earl Alexander 4th was southbound on Route 71 when he lost control of his car around 12:35 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle then flipped onto its side and crashed into the pole.

Alexander was alone in the vehicle when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
