A teenage boy has died after police said he fell down an elevator shaft at an abandoned hospital on Staten Island.

It happened around 5 p.m. Friday evening on Castleton Avenue in the Tompkinsville neighborhood.

The New York Police Department said investigators believe 16-year-old Marcos Castillo was playing inside the building when he fell down the elevator shaft in the seven-story building.

Authorities said the teen sustained head trauma in the fall. He was pronounced dead after being rushed to Richmond University Medical Center.

The building is the former site of Staten Island Hospital, which closed its doors and relocated in 1979.
