NYPD: Knife-wielding lacrosse captain nearly guts roommate

NEW YORK (AP) — A St. John's University men's lacrosse captain has been arrested and removed from the team after police say he stabbed and nearly disemboweled his roommate.

The New York Police Department says 21-year-old Matthew Stockfeder knifed the man — a 23-year-old St. John's alumnus — early Tuesday as they brawled at an unofficial frat house near the university's Queens campus. Police say the victim is expected to survive.

Stockfeder is to be arraigned Wednesday on an assault charge. It wasn't immediately known if he had a lawyer.

St. John's says it's aware of the incident and cooperating with police.

Stockfeder is no longer listed on the lacrosse team's online roster and isn't participating in team activities. A search link to his profile on the St. John's athletics website returns an error message.
