NY woman charged after newborn found dead in trash bag

NEW YORK (AP) -- A 28-year-old woman is being held without bail on a murder charge after police say she gave birth to a girl and threw the newborn away in a garbage can at her home.

Nausheen Rahman was arraigned Monday on Staten Island. Prosecutors say that based on their investigation and her statements to authorities, Rahman gave birth on Friday, then cut the umbilical cord and put her newborn baby daughter, alive and breathing, into a trash bag.

The infant's body was discovered Saturday after a 911 call. It's not clear if she gave birth at the home, or somewhere else. The medical examiner's office says the cause of death was pending further study.

Rahman was also charged with unlawful concealment of a corpse. A call to her attorney wasn't immediately returned.
