NY state trooper badly hurt on Long Island

A New York state trooper who was badly hurt when a car struck him on an overpass on Long Island Monday afternoon remains hospitalized, officials said.

The accident happened on an overpass connecting the Long Island Expressway and the Sagtikos Parkway as Trooper Joseph Gallagher, 35, was helping someone whose car had broken down, police said.

Gallagher was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for surgery. After surgery, he was listed in serious condition, police said.

Police said Tuesday that his condition has not been updated.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the trooper stopped and stayed at the scene and has not been charged at this time.
