"No Homeless Shelter" chant protesters in Queens

Not in their backyard. Residents of Maspeth, Queens are fighting to keep the city from converting a Holiday Inn Express on 55 Road into a homeless shelter.

City officials say their plan includes housing 110 homeless families at the shelter by Oct. 1.

The location was selected because hundreds of the homeless residents formerly lived in addresses within the area, which is Community District 5.

Angry residents who protested outside the hotel Monday night, said they already have a shelter in their neighborhood and don't want another.

They cite a lack of public transportation, supermarkets and proximity to schools for keeping the homeless out.
