JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- A plan to moor barges off New Jersey's Liberty State Park has been shelved.
The mooring buoy would have accommodated up to five barges measuring 195-feet long.
Residents and officials including Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop had objected to the buoy's location north of Ellis Island and east of the Statue of Liberty.
In a joint statement released Tuesday, the New York State Marine Highway Transportation Company said it understood the proposed location wasn't viable and that it would work with the Army Corps of Engineers to find a more suitable site.
LSP is a short ferry ride from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
