NJ man charged with murder, rape in ex-girlfriend's killing

HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man accused of raping and strangling his ex-girlfriend while their baby slept in a nearby crib has been indicted on murder and sexual assault charges.

A grand jury also charged 24-year-old Mark Spatucci of Midland Park with child endangerment and other crimes in the October 2013 killing of Mary Greff.

The 23-year-old Greff was found dead at her parents' Waldwick home. Authorities say Spatucci climbed through a window, sexually assaulted her and strangled her before fleeing out the same window. Their 9-month-old baby wasn't harmed.

Spatucci pleaded not guilty to murder, burglary, child endangerment and hindering apprehension after his arrest. Prosecutors say the sexual assault charges were added after a post-mortem exam. It wasn't clear if Spatucci had an attorney who could comment on them.

He is being held on $2 million bail.
