A snowstorm hit the New York City area but totals were expected to be lower than originally expected. A few school districts were reporting closures or delays.

Much of New York City, Long Island, and coastal New Jersey could see just a coating up to 1 inch, which could make for slick driving conditions.

Northwestern New Jersey and the northern suburbs of New York City could see 2 inches to 5 inches of snow. Far northwest New Jersey and the Hudson Valley could see more than 6.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon and Somerset counties in New Jersey and several more in New York. Some counties in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut are under a winter storm warning.

"Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the morning commute on Wednesday," the National Weather Service said in an alert. "Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving."
