Nazi-saluting Lady Liberty in Times Square
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Lady Liberty has lost her way. It is the focus of a billboard as long as a city block in Times Square. The symbol of freedom is depicted transformed into a Nazi-saluting sign of oppression. It is all part of the marketing campaign for the second season of the fictional TV show "The Man in the High Castle" on Amazon.
The series depicts a world in which America lost World War II.
An Amazon spokesman says Season 2 "continues the journey into an imaginary, fictional world... if you're interested to see what an alternate world could look like if history had gone another way, you should watch the show."
Evan Bernstein, the New York regional director of the ADL, said: "Amazon as every right to put any ads that they want, but it's a challenge when there are people that are going to take offense to it, specifically people that experienced the Nazi party first hand." He said the ad is particularly upsetting given the current political climate and recent announcement by the NYPD that hate crimes have doubled since the election.
Last year, before the first season the series also displayed offensive ads in the subways. The ads were eventually taken down.
This billboards fate is unclear. New Yorkers say if the goal is to gain attention then it is a success even if the content is a failure.
