Mother killed, daughter injured by car on Long Island

LINDENHURST, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say a mother was killed and her 16-year-old daughter was injured when they were struck by a vehicle backing out of a parking spot in Lindenhurst.

Suffolk County police say it happened just after 9 a.m. Sunday as 55-year-old Diane Aluska and Jenna Aluska were walking on the sidewalk on South Wellwood Avenue.

Police say a Toyota Corolla, driven by 80-year-old Ann Riolo, of Lindenhurst, drove onto the sidewalk in reverse, struck the pedestrians and then struck the Lindenhurst Fire Department.

The mother was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her daughter and the 80-year-old driver were hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries.
