The days of racing to get a train ticket or paying extra after you board are numbered. The MTA is making it easier to get Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road tickets whenever you want.

With the MTA eTix app you don't have to wait in line. You can purchase your tix whenever wherever. It's already available on the LIRR for Port Washington branch and on the Metro-North Hudson line. MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast said it is part of modernizing the MTA and providing better service to riders.

MTA eTix is a free app that will allow Long Island and Metro-North customers purchase train tickets with their mobile device. It doesn't matter if it's a single ride or a monthly pass. Riders will no longer have to wait on long lines to buy a ticket from the ticket booth or machine.

The process is easy and simple. Click a few tabs, your ticket saves to your electronic ticket wallet. When you're ready to use it, you activate it by pressing the activate button and just show it to the conductor.

The MTA is rolling the app out in phases. It will be available on other branches and lines by late August.
