March and rally for hit-run victim

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - "Justicia para Luz" means "Justice for Luz." It is a rallying cry for friends and family of Luz Gonzales, 4, who was killed in Bushwick, Brooklyn, by a hit-and-run driver.

Hundreds of people marched Thursday, as they have for the last several nights, from the laundromat where the little girl was killed to the 83rd Precinct. They're demanding to know why no one has been arrested.

Through a translator, Renya Candia, Luz's mother, told Fox 5 that support from the community of mostly Mexican American residents has helped her cope.

The tragedy happened late last month. Candia was tying her daughter's shoe near the parking lot when there was a collision and the SUV drove off. Candia said she is sure the driver knew what happened.

Officers later detained the 38-year-old woman who was driving. But no charges have been filed. The NYPD told Fox 5 that the investigation is ongoing.

That is not good enough for Candia's supporters.

Thursday's rally outside the precinct was the last for now. But the family plans to keep up the pressure. They told me they plan to hold a symbolic funeral mass for their loved one outside the laundromat where she was killed.
