Man walking in town in underwear assaults officer

WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) — Westport Police say a man walking in the town wearing only underwear assaulted police officers.

Police say they responded to multiple calls about the man on Friday.  They say an officer approached to check on his welfare, was immediately struck in the face and a struggle ensued.

They say additional officers arrived and attempted to subdue the man, who resisted being taken into custody and bit an officer. The man and two officers were taken to a local hospital to be treated.

Police plan to publicly release the man's name after he is formally charged. He faces charges of assault of public safety personnel and breach of peace.

The incident is under investigation.
