Man sentenced for falsely implicating brother in slaying

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — A man who falsely implicated his brother in the shooting death of a teenager killed just hours after he graduated from high school has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The term imposed Friday on Walter Seegers will run concurrently with a five-year sentence he received for an unrelated drug conviction. Passaic County prosecutors say the 52-year-old Paterson man must serve three years before he becomes eligible for parole.

Authorities say Seegers was involved in a dispute with his brother and wanted revenge. So he provided police with false information about the June 2013 slaying of 18-year-old Isaac Rinas.

Authorities have said the Wayne teen had driven to Paterson because he wanted to buy a gun. But he was fatally shot during a robbery orchestrated by a former classmate.
