Man arrested on hate crime charge after bus attack
NEW YORK (AP) -- A man has been arrested and is accused of attacking a man on a New Jersey Transit bus while shouting anti-gay epithets, police said.
Daniel Rijos, 40, was arrested Monday on charges of aggravated harassment and assault as a hate crime, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police said.
Authorities said Rijos was on a New York City-bound bus around 6:30 p.m. Monday when he started cursing and shouting anti-gay slurs at another passenger on the bus. Police said he stuck his finger in the man's eye and then began punching him.
Other passengers flagged down police in Manhattan. The victim, who suffered bruising and a laceration to his eye, was treated at a hospital.
It wasn't immediately clear if Rijos had an attorney who could comment.
