Man and woman rescued from East River

The NYPD and firefighters rescued a woman and a man from the East River near the Williamsburg Bridge on Thursday morning.

Both people were taken to Pier 16 and then to a hospital and were expected to be OK.

The man was pulled from the water near the bridge first, around 6 a.m. The woman, who was naked, was rescued a short time later from underneath Pier 36.

It was unclear how or why the pair ended up in the river.
