Man accused of killing woman running in park appears in court in New Jersey

A man who has been twice deported was in a New Jersey court on Thursday to face murder and other charges.

Jorge Rios, 33, is accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting, and strangling a woman to death in Lincoln Park. He listened to the court proceedings with the help of an interpreter.

Prosecutors said that Carolina Cano, 45, was running in the park on the morning of March 24 when Rios attacked her.

Cano's body was found in the park's lake. An autopsy determined she died from strangulation and water submersion. Authorities said he had been sexually assaulted.

Investigators reviewed security camera video that showed both Cano and Rios in the park around the same time.

Authorities said Rios, who is from Honduras, is in the United States illegally. He will remain in custody until the next court hearing.
