Long Island teen ID'd in accidental shooting

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Police on Long Island have released the name of the 15-year-old boy who died after accidentally shooting himself while playing with a loaded handgun.

Nassau County police have identified the victim as Derek Cosme of Glen Cove. 

Nassau County Police say that three youth were playing with a loaded handgun just after 8 p.m. in a Williams Street home.

Cosme fired a shot, hitting himself.  He died at the scene according to a Nassau County Police Department Police Medic.

Police say the gun belonged to a retired corrections officer who lives at the home of the grandmother of one of the boys. According to police, the man has a licensed to own the pistol.

Police say the investigation is ongoing but no charges have been filed yet.
