Long Island fire damages 5 homes

LINDENHURST, N.Y. (AP) -- Authorities say five houses were damaged in a fast spreading fire on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say the fire started on E. Santa Barbara Road in Lindenhurst just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire then spread to four additional homes.

Embers from the flames also touched off a brush fire across the canal on Indian Island County Park. Two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and one was hospitalized. There were no other injuries.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the fire.
