LIRR strikes person causing widespread disruptions

Authorities say a person was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train, leading to widespread travel disruptions.

The unidentified person was hit by a train at the Woodside station in Queens around 5 a.m. Friday. Service between Penn Station and Jamaica was suspended while authorities investigated the death.

A Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman says limited service has resumed.

He says trains are running at reduced speeds and are bypassing the Kew Gardens, Forest Hills and Woodside stations.
