Lifeguard shortage on Long Island

Swimmers at Jones Beach who were looking to use the West Bathhouse pool were out of luck and will be until Saturday because there aren't enough lifeguards.

George Gorman is with the New York State Parks Office. He says there hasn't been a lifeguard shortage in over 5 years and this one doesn't have to do with budget CUTS. It's because Labor Day is later this year and some school districts are starting earlier. he says many of the summer lifeguards were students and teachers who had to go back to school. Gorman says 350 lifeguards are on duty at Long Island beaches and will be through Labor Day.

Babylon has also closed its pools this week for the same reason and will reopen on Saturday for the Labor Day holiday weekend.
