The Coast Guard, NYPD, FDNY, and other agencies were searching for a possible missing kite surfer off the shore off Sandy Hook in New Jersey Friday evening.

A boater witnessed a kite surfer in distress near Horseshoe Cove in Sandy Hook Bay at about 5:30 p.m., the Coast Guard said. The boater investigated and said the kite had blown away and the surfer had vanished.

Horseshoe Cove is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Parks. The Coast Guard has a small station there.
