LOS ANGELES - The streaming app, Hulu, appears to be in its final days.
Here's what we know so far:
When will Hulu app shut down?
What we know:
Hulu's parent company, The Walt Disney Company, will reportedly shut down the stand-alone app and integrate all of its content with Disney+ sometime this year, but Hulu is already disappearing on some platforms.
Earlier this month, Nintendo announced Hulu will no longer be available on the Nintendo Switch next month.
"The Hulu app is no longer available in the Nintendo Switch eShop with support for the application ending on February 5, 2026," the company said on its website.
The Hulu app is still available on other platforms currently.
What we don't know:
Disney has not confirmed a specific date as to when the standalone Hulu app will no longer be available.
FOX Television Stations has reached out to the Walt Disney Company for comment.
The backstory:
In 2023, the Walt Disney Co. acquired a 33% stake in Hulu from Comcast for at least $8.6 billion, a deal that gave Disney full control of the streaming service.
Disney has run Hulu since 2019, when Comcast ceded its authority to Disney and effectively became a silent partner.
Hulu began in 2007 and quickly evolved into as a service backed by entertainment conglomerates who hoped to stave off the internet with an online platform for their own TV shows. Disney joined in 2009, planning to offer shows from ABC, ESPN and the Disney Channel. A decade later, Disney gained majority control of the business when it acquired 21st Century Fox.
Variety first reported the Hulu app will merge with Disney+ in August.
