How is this lazy trend making Americans healthier?
ITHACA, NY - The Internet was outraged when Whole Foods started selling pre-peeled oranges, but it turns out that they- and Chrissy Teigen- may have been on to something. A study done in school cafeterias proves what every mom already knows- apple consumption increases by 60% when you serve the fruit pre-sliced.
They say the hardest part of getting kids to eat healthy foods is getting them to take the first bite. Pre-slicing the apples takes away every conceivable inconvenience. So we can trick kids into eating more apples- but guess what? It works on adults too.
The apple industry thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread. Businesses have to innovate to grow and they finally found something revolutionary by packaging them pre-sliced.
Overall apple consumption has grown by 13 percent since 2010- and that just happens to coincide with the dawn of the sliced apple. In 2014, we ate 500 million sliced apples.
There’s less food waste, but more packaging waste. Is it worth it if we're getting an apple a day?
