How Google Flights can help you get a good deal

NEW JERSEY (FOX 5 NEWS) - Of all the headaches of holiday travel planning what could be the most painful? That dollar sign you see right before checkout. Websites like Kayak and Skyscanner find the cheapest flights for you as you're booking. Even apps like Hopper or Hotlist send you price alerts or deals. None, however, actually predict when the price of a flight will change. Until now.

Google -- that all-knowing, all-seeing internet search behemoth is about to launch a new feature on its Google Flights site that notifies you even days ahead of time when the fare you're seeing will change.

And just how does Google do it? By relying on an immeasurable amount of historical flight data, Google can predict when a specific fare will change and can also recommend cheaper routes or airports. That is a lot more accurate than anything we can do ourselves.

Travel expert Lee Abbamonte suggests going to the airlines' actual websites to get the cheapest deal since they're not paying third parties like Travelocity or Expedia. And by the way, if Google ever does become a player in the airline price war, Abbamonte has a prediction of his own: Google will crush it and put a lot of websites out of business.
