Gunmen fire on crowd in Brooklyn; 2 women dead

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Two men opened fire in a Brooklyn courtyard Wednesday night, mortally wounding two women, the NYPD said.

The gunmen fired on a large crowd inside the Stuyvesant Garden Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police officers and medics responded to the scene and found Chynna Battle, 21, shot in the head and Shaqwanda Staley, 29, wounded in the back.

EMS rushed Battle to Woodhull Hospital and Staley to Kings County Hospital, where they died.

Detectives are trying to determine if the victims were the intended targets or bystanders. Police have gathered evidence and security camera video from the housing project.

Neighbors told Fox 5 that both women had children.
