Garage at LaGuardia Airport closes

Make some more time for yourself if you're flying out of LaGuardia Airport because the main parking garage is closing Friday, taking away at least 2,000 parking spaces. And that's not likely to change for another 2 years.

The signs are everywhere as LaGuardia Airport enters the next phase of a $4 billion upgrade project. No one will feel the growing pains more than travelers.

The Port Authority has been encouraging travelers to use other ways of getting to the airport like mass transit. It is also changing around bus routes to accommodate. That comes as little comfort to those who have cars and want to use them.

In a statement the Port Authority writes: "As demand fluctuates, LaGuardia airport staff will continue to manage parking demand during the construction work period, especially during peak travel seasons." It also says travelers will be able to reserve parking ahead of time at laguardiaairport.com.

A new long-term lot with 1,800 spots at the Marine Air Terminal will be opening so that means to get to check in travelers will have to hop on a shuttle bus.
