Fire rips through building in Chelsea

The FDNY is on the scene of a fire in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. Flames ripped through the roof of the building on W.17th St. between 7th and 8th Aves.

There are no reports of injuries. The building is reportedly in danger of collapsing.

A fire department spokesman says the large fire was brought under control at 7:11 a.m. Tuesday. It broke out around 3 a.m. on the fourth floor of the 6-story building and quickly spread through the roof.

Several streets in the area remain closed.

The building was reportedly to house multi-million dollar condominiums, with construction slated to be finished by the end of 2016.

Several neighborhood buildings were evacuated as heavy smoke — seen for miles — billowed into the air.
