MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a car crashed into a tree and caught fire on Long Island, killing the driver and critically injuring two teenage passengers.
The crash happened at around 8:45 a.m. Friday in Mastic Beach.
Suffolk County police say 20-year-old William Smith was driving a 1996 Lexus when he lost control of the car, which struck a tree and caught fire.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. A good Samaritan helped police pull two passengers from the wrecked car.
The passengers, 16-year-old Rasin Jackson and his 15-year-old brother, Zameer Jackson, were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
Officer David Collins was treated for smoke inhalation at the same hospital.
