Costume designer Ruth Carter went above & beyond to dress 'Black Panther' cast
LOS ANGELES - Black Panther isn’t your average superhero and costume designer Ruth Carter will be the first to tell you.
Black Panther was set up for success thanks to everyone on the production team, especially Carter. Carter did not want the costumes to look anything like costumes in the world of Wakanda.
“This is something that’s super special to this particular story and this particular costume. I need you to understand the culture and the feeling that this needs to evoke when it’s done. It cannot look like a costume. It has to look like a uniform that is worn by women who are fighting. It has to feel real.”
There was no cutting corners when it came to the film’s costumes!
“The process is really long. We even had a person who had to study how the Panther suit stretched around the muscles so that our little, tiny surface pattern wouldn’t warp in a weird way. He had to engineer how it could stay at the right size. Don’t ask me to explain it. That guy needs a paid vacation.”
Black Panther is officially out in theaters Friday, February 16th!
