Coney Island boardwalk designated Scenic Landmark

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has designated Brooklyn's Coney Island boardwalk a Scenic Landmark. The famous waterfront promenade -- now 2.7 miles (4.34 km) long -- opened on May 15, 1923.

It was built in three phases between 1922 and 1941 and became a magnet for generations of locals and tourists alike. Commission Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan says the "beloved public space" embodies Coney Island's "democratic spirit" and reflects the city's values of tolerance, inclusiveness and equity.

The designation recognizes historical significance and protects the basic footprint of the boardwalk, which has undergone numerous changes over the years. Spokeswoman Zodet Negron  says some sections are concrete, some are wood and still others are recycled plastic.
