Chain-reaction highway crash leaves 1 dead, several injured

EDISON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a chain-reaction crash on a major New Jersey highway has killed one person and left several others injured.

The crash on Route 1 southbound in Edison occurred around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities say a tractor-trailer rear-ended a minivan that was stopped in rush-hour traffic, setting off a chain reaction crash that involved six other vehicles.

One person was killed in the accident, while another was hospitalized in critical condition. The other injured people mostly suffered bumps, bruises and cuts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities say a stretch of the roadway was shuttered for several hours before it was reopened early Thursday.
