Americans will bet $6 billion on Super Bowl, survey says

Americans are expected to wager $6 billion on the Super Bowl this year, up 26 percent from last year, according to a survey from the American Gaming Association.

Last year, 97 percent of bets placed were illegal. But that number is expected to go down this year because several states, including New Jersey, have legalized wagering on sports.

After an eight-year fight, new jersey legalized sports betting. since then, wagers have exploded. That will only intensify this weekend, according to Mike Raffensperger, the chief marketing officer of FanDuel, which now has a sportsbook at the Meadowlands.

The American Gaming Association's survey showed that about one in 10 adults in the U.S. plans to bet on Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams; 52 percent say they will bet on the Rams while 48 percent will bet on the Patriots.
