Aircraft crashes into waters off Cape May

The Federal Aviation Administration says there is a report an aircraft has crashed in the water near Cape May and is submerged.

CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) -- CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) -- Coast Guard boat crews and a helicopter are on the scene of a small plane crash in the water off Cape May Point in New Jersey.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single engine Mooney M20J aircraft crashed in the water approximately 1,200 feet (365 meters) from the Cape May Lighthouse on Wednesday and is submerged.

Video obtained by WPVI-TV shows the aircraft veering into the surf.

The FAA says there is one person aboard.

The craft had departed Trenton-Robbinsville Airport around 8 a.m.

The Cape May Fire Department and lifeguards are also helping with the search.
