Airbus wants to stack passengers on planes

Airbus, the European airplane manufacturer, has filed a patent application in the United States for an overhead seating design that would have passengers stacked on top of each other. The new, bi-level layout would allow for more passengers. The seats would also lie flat.

In the application, Airbus wrote: "In modern means of transport, in particular in aircraft, it is very important from an economic point of view to make optimum use of the available space in a passenger cabin."
