3 children struck by vehicle on Long Island

Three boys crossing a Long Island highway just before 5 a.m. Wednesday were struck by a vehicle in Lindenhurst.

The trio, who had just left their home, were on their way to a 7-Eleven when they were hit by the vehicle traveling westbound at Sunrise Highway and Straight Path, according to Suffolk County Police.

All three - Jose L. Lopez, 13, Luis Tejada, 12, and Jose E. Lopez, 9, were rushed to the trauma center at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

The eldest boy was in critical condition while his nine-year-old brother was in serious condition.  The 12-year-old, who is their cousin, was also injured.

SkyFox was over the scene where a gold-colored sedan with damage to the windshield and an open door remained in the roadway.

Police were investigating the incident. The driver, 20-year-old Ryan Arthur, was not hurt and remained at the scene.  His Dodge Stratus was impounded for a safety check.
