2 Guantanamo detainees leave, 1 refuses

MIAMI (AP) — A flurry of releases from the Guantanamo Bay prison has ended with two men being sent to Europe to start new lives. A third refused to board the flight out and remains at the U.S. base in Cuba.

The Defense Department identified the two who left as an Egyptian with severe health problems who went to Bosnia and a Yemeni who went to Montenegro. Neither could return to their homelands.

Their release brings the Guantanamo prisoner population to 91.

They were part of what was to be 17 leaving this month. The Pentagon wouldn't say Thursday why Muhammad Bawazir wouldn't accept resettlement in an undisclosed country. Attorney John Chandler says Bawazir insisted on being sent to one of several countries where he has family since he couldn't return to Yemen.
