A new group of heroes joined the ranks of the FDNY on Wednesday; 311 probationary firefighters graduated during a ceremony in Brooklyn. This class had plenty of inspiration on the path to becoming New York's Bravest. The class featured two third-generation firefighters. But for the first time in the FDNY's 153-year history, a child followed in his mother's footsteps.

A car jumped the curb and slammed into a crowd of pedestrians in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Friday night. The incident happened at Flatbush and Farragut Avenues at about 8:45 p.m. At least 13 people were hurt, the FDNY said. Two of them are in extremely critical condition. The driver and passenger were also taken to the hospital.

A New York City firefighter killed while battling a fire on a movie set has been hailed as a hero in the majestic St. Patrick's Cathedral. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, noting that Catholics are observing Holy Week, said Tuesday that Michael Davidson, 37, gave his life for others, as Jesus did. Dolan said Davidson's blood contained "the DNA of the FDNY" and that his "service as a fireman was a vocation, hardly a job." During the mass, Eric Davidson described his brother as "salt of the earth."

Mourners of a New York City firefighter killed fighting a fire on a movie set are paying their respects over the coming days. The viewing for Michael Davidson was held at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home in Floral Park Sunday and Monday. Captain Daniel Kudlak and firefighters who worked with Davidson at Engine Company 69 Ladder 28 in Harlem came Monday evening. Kudlak said he and Davidson were more than colleagues?they were close friends and their fathers worked at the same firehouse.

A precession Friday took Davidson's body back home to Long Island. The 37-year-old had served the FDNY for 15 years. Two members of the FDNY were among the seven U.S. service members killed when their helicopter crashed in western Iraq on Thursday. The helo, used by the Air Force for combat search and rescue, went down in Anbar Province, the Pentagon said. All crew members died. Among them was Christopher Raguso, a lieutenant in the FDNY, according to the Commack Fire Department on Long Island, where he also volunteered. Christopher "Tripp" Zanetis also died in the crash, the New York Post reported, citing his father.
