Flood victims of Hurricane Florence are receiving help from the New York area. Various organizations and municipalities have been offering support to communities in the South. Members of New York Task Force 1 have been in North Carolina since last week. They rescued people in River Bend on Friday. Then Monday, the team patrolled Pollocksville, N.C., to conduct evacuations and welfare checks. The team includes NYPD, FDNY, and EMS personnel.

Two men who caused the death of a New York City fire chief in an explosion at an illegal indoor marijuana-growing operation two years ago were sentenced to prison on Friday for their guilty pleas to manslaughter and marijuana charges. Garivaldi Castillo, 33, and Julio Salcedo, 36, were charged in the death of Battalion Chief Michael Fahy, 44, a 17-year veteran of the fire department and father of three.

A car jumped the curb and slammed into a crowd of pedestrians in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Friday night. The incident happened at Flatbush and Farragut Avenues at about 8:45 p.m. At least 13 people were hurt, the FDNY said. Two of them are in extremely critical condition. The driver and passenger were also taken to the hospital.

A New York City firefighter killed while battling a fire on a movie set has been hailed as a hero in the majestic St. Patrick's Cathedral. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, noting that Catholics are observing Holy Week, said Tuesday that Michael Davidson, 37, gave his life for others, as Jesus did. Dolan said Davidson's blood contained "the DNA of the FDNY" and that his "service as a fireman was a vocation, hardly a job." During the mass, Eric Davidson described his brother as "salt of the earth."

Dalton Funeral Home in Floral Park Sunday and Monday. Captain Daniel Kudlak and firefighters who worked with Davidson at Engine Company 69 Ladder 28 in Harlem came Monday evening. Kudlak said he and Davidson were more than colleagues?they were close friends and their fathers worked at the same firehouse.

FDNY heroes killed in Iraq

Two members of the FDNY were among the seven U.S. service members killed when their helicopter crashed in western Iraq on Thursday. The helo, used by the Air Force for combat search and rescue, went down in Anbar Province, the Pentagon said. All crew members died. Among them was Christopher Raguso, a lieutenant in the FDNY, according to the Commack Fire Department on Long Island, where he also volunteered. Christopher "Tripp" Zanetis also died in the crash, the New York Post reported, citing his father.
