New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Christina Farrell joined FOX 5 to discuss the city’s safety preparations for a packed July 4th weekend, including Sail4th 250, America 250 celebrations, fireworks, extreme heat and the threat of storms. Farrell said the city has been planning for more than a year and activated its emergency operations center full time Wednesday morning. She said agencies are coordinating across the boroughs to manage weather, transportation and major events throughout the holiday weekend.

The Macy’s 4th of July fireworks return to the East River this year as the show celebrates its 50th anniversary and America’s 250th birthday. Some of the best viewing spots include Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Seaport, but those require one of the city’s free lottery tickets. Other public viewing options include the FDR Drive, Brooklyn Heights Promenade, DUMBO, Exchange Place and Liberty State Park in Jersey City. FOX 5’s Mike Woods says strong storms could move through the NYC area later this afternoon and evening, possibly affecting fireworks shows.

Preparations are intensifying outside Madison Square Garden ahead of the long-rumored Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce wedding celebration. FOX 5’s Meredith Gorman reports large white tents, lighting rigs and what appears to be a step-and-repeat-style backdrop have been set up near the VIP south entrance. Street closures are expected to begin around 1 p.m. between West 30th and West 34th streets, including portions of Seventh Avenue around MSG. Access to Penn Station is expected to remain available from the Eighth Avenue side.

New York Harbor is celebrating America’s 250th birthday with Sail4th 250, a massive maritime and aerial gathering featuring a parade of tall ships. FOX 5’s Linda Schmidt reports from Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, where families can watch the ships sail down the East River. The Class B tall ships gathered near Hell Gate in Astoria before making their way south toward the South Street Seaport and Gravesend Bay. Viewing spots include Gantry Plaza State Park, the Upper East Side and Lower East Side waterfronts and the South Street Seaport.

FOX 5’s Jessica Formoso was there as the ball dropped for Guam, kicking off a day of celebrations in New York City. The ball will drop seven more times throughout the day and tomorrow, with the display lighting up for America 250. People can watch in person in Times Square or stream the celebration through America250.org.
