What to buy in August: smart shopping tips

August is a great time for end-of-summer sales.

Trae Bodge, a smart-shopping expert for Slickdeals, says you'll find especially good deals on outdoor categories. So if you've had your eye on a new barbecue for the backyard, a lawnmower, patio furniture, or a brand-new bike, they will finally be on sale in August.

Trae says retailers are trying to clear out summer stock to make room for holiday merchandise.

This is also a terrific time to get started on that back-to-school shopping. This category may offer the best deals of the month, whether you have kids or not. Expect deep discounts on clothing, laptops, and tablets.

Office Depot has school supplies for as little as a penny, in stores only.

American Eagle is doing 50 percent off clearance clothes and accessories, starting at just $3.

L.L. Bean is offering 20 percent off kids' backpacks and clothing through August 27.

Keep an eye on Slickdeals' back-to-school page for the latest sales and discounts.

Trae also says to keep an eye on the bigger box stores like Target and Walmart for flash sales.

If it feels like summer is flying by and you need one more vacation, this is also a great time to book last-minute travel. Trae says last year Slickdeals found great one-way flight deals in the month of August. Frontier, Virgin America, and JetBlue were offering $15, $29, and $39 one-way domestic flights in 2016. Look for similar deals this August if you're able to take a last-minute domestic vacation.

August is also a great time to stock up on pet supplies. Trae says Amazon is discounting food, grooming, and toys for your pets. 1-800-PET MEDS.COM is also offering 25 percent off pet supplies.

Don't dip too heavily into fall and winter clothes for the kids when you're doing back-to-school shopping. Clothes for colder weather will be cheaper in September and October.

And wait to shop for Apple products. Apple usually launches its new devices in September, when you can find deals on last year's models.
