What to buy and what to pass on in June

Summer vacations, new clothes for camp, even gifts for Father's Day. There's a lot to buy in the month of June. Smart shopping expert Trae Bodge explains how to get the most for your money.

One of the biggest deal categories for June is travel. Bodge says now is the time to book that summer vacation. Slickdeals has flights to Myrtle Beach for $118 round trip out of New York. Looking to go a little further? Fly from JFK to Hong Kong and back on Asiana Airlines for $575. Bodge says international travel, which tends to be very expensive in summer, is heavily discounted in June.

You can also get great deals on hotel rooms. Hilton is offering 50 percent off Sunday-night stays and double points on rooms through the end of August.

If you're staying close to home this summer, look for deals on movies and entertainment. Bodge says last summer Groupon had $20 worth of movie tickets for $10. Fandango was selling $100 gift certificates for $71. Amazon also offered great deals on Blu-ray discs and DVDs, if you're looking to stay home in the air conditioning when it gets too hot.

This is also a great time to hit the department stores. Bodge says summer clothing is starting to go on sale. Better yet, there are great deals on women's accessories and handbags. Nordstrom is running their half yearly sale through June 4. We found women's handbags, watches even Prada sunglasses all 40 percent off.

Summer clothes for kids are also discounted. The Children's Place is bringing back their popular 80 percent off clearance sale and Carter's has 20 percent off purchases of $40 or more through the end of the month with the code CAR63017.

Don't forget about Father's Day on June 18. Bodge says Macy's is offering 20 percent off that week. Slick Deals has everything from laptops to watches on sale. Jet already has Stanley and Bosch tools discounted for Dad.

Bodge says you'll usually see nice sales before any gift-giving holiday like Father's Day. So it's a good time to get something for Dad and maybe something for yourself, too!
