Tree crashes into house, killing boy

A tree that fell onto a house in Putnam County, New York, during the powerful winter storm trapped a boy Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Firefighters and sheriff's deputies responded to the home on Dunderberg Road in Putnam Valley just after noon and dug through debris to rescue the boy, according to Sheriff Robert Langley Jr.

But medics pronounced the 11-year-old dead a short time later. They brought his mother to a hospital for treatment.

Winds gusted to more than 50 mph in the area when the tree fell, according to the National Weather Service.

The nor'easter pounded the New York area on Friday with heavy rain, snow, and wind. Trucks flipped over on the Verrazano Bridge and the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Construction barges got loose on the Hudson River.
