Shopping deals: What to buy in May

The months of May and June are both full of sales thanks to Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Memorial Day.

Trae Bodge, a smart shopping expert with Slickdeals, says there are great deals ahead, especially in the gift category.

Memorial Day is one of Trae's favorite three-day weekends for shopping. Look for sales in camping and outdoor gear, along with mattresses. Lots of big-ticket items, like appliances, are on sale throughout the month. It's Maytag Month, which means you can get up to $700 back on Maytag appliances, depending on how many you buy.

Look for appliance discounts in the big box stores as well. Home Depot has up to 40 percent off dishwashers, stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, and more. Sears is taking up to 35 percent off appliances and 50 percent off dryers if you buy a matching washing machine.

Trae says this month is great for new appliances, but take the time to do your research. A lot of the deals will run for several weeks in May, so don't rush into a big purchase.

Remember that Mother's Day is May 13. Mom will be thrilled to know you got a sale. Trae says to look for deals around gift categories like accessories, some women's apparel, and jewelry. Macy's has deals on everything from wine glasses to jewelry for mom. Plus, take an extra 30 percent off with Macy's Friends and Family Sale through May 7.

If you're going to buy flowers around Mother's Day, be sure to shop around. Trae says you'll see a lot of seemingly good discounts, but they're often based on an already marked-up price for the holiday, which is then marked down. So make sure you know what you're getting.

Workout gear is also on sale this month. Trae says it's a great time to stock up on new sneakers, leggings or other athletic wear. Expect deep discounts, upwards of 50 percent off. Nike has up to 55 percent off clearance. Under Armour has men's and women's athletic gear on sale, too.
