Shopping deals: What to buy in February

If you're thinking about proposing or buying jewelry this Valentine's Day, you'll find great sales.

Trae Bodge, the smart-shopping expert with Slickdeals, says your timing is spot on. Historically, we see the best deals on jewelry around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day every year, she says. So this is a good time to invest in some jewelry.

Slickdeals has a page dedicated to Valentine's Day deals.

Kay Jewelers is offering 30 percent to 40 percent off.

Both Sears and Kmart have fine jewelry up to 75 percent off.

Oriental Trading has up to 60 percent off toys, crafts, and candy.

Watch out if you're buying flowers, even if they appear to be on sale. The pre-sale prices are usually inflated this time of year.

This is also a great time to buy accessories, like sunglasses. Trae says you'll see deals from big-box retailers Bloomingdale's, Target, and Macy's, which has 30 percent off select sunglasses.

EBay has Persol sunglasses for $53 plus free shipping.

Smartphones are also on sale this month. T-Mobile is offering buy-one, get-one deals on iPhones, including the new iPhone 8. Trae says there will be a lot of 2-for-1 deals on phones around Valentine's Day. Smartphone deals are 40 percent better this time of year, according to Slickdeals, so it's a great time to invest in a smartphone or two.

Presidents' Day is also a good holiday for bargains. Trae says you'll find good mattress sales over that holiday weekend. Because a mattress is a big-ticket item, look for 20 percent off or more. If you don't see those types of discounts, wait until Memorial Day when we also tend to see good mattress sales.
