Police: Infant hospitalized after being assaulted by father

JOHNSBURG, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities have charged a 24-year-old man with assaulting his 22-day-old daughter, leaving the infant in critical condition at an upstate New York hospital.

State police say troopers were called around 5 a.m. Monday for an emergency involving an infant at the home of Nicholas Jones in the Warren County town of Johnsburg, 65 miles north of Albany.

Officials say Jones had physically abused his baby. He was charged with assault, reckless assault of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

The baby was taken to Albany Medical Center, where she's listed in critical condition.

Jones is being held Tuesday in the county jail on $100,000 cash bail. He was represented at his arraignment by a public defender who said a new lawyer will be assigned to his defense.
