Mom who sickened son heading to jail

CINCINNATI (AP) — A New York woman accused of sickening her 4-year-old son by injecting something into his feeding tube at a Cincinnati hospital has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and ordered to stay off the hospital's property.

A Hamilton County prosecutor's spokesman says 26-year-old Jessica Valik was sentenced Tuesday on a child endangering count. She will receive credit for time served.

Prosecutors say that while Valik's son was being treated at Cincinnati Children's Hospital for a rare disease that causes skin to blister, she added Benadryl to his feeding tube last fall.

The motive remains a mystery. But the Syracuse woman earlier pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor.

Authorities say the boy remains at the hospital under a relative's guardianship.

Valik's attorney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.
